It Takes a Village was the theme of our artist meeting on 20th April 2024 when MOTHEROTHER met at Navigator North in Middlesbrough. We were introduced to Brotherhood of Motherhood by Nic Golightly and Anna Byrne. BofM is a supportive collective of artist mothers from the Tees Valley who banded together as a way to support artistic practice as well as each other as parents. Ree Kirkbride, Aimee Charlotte and Miki Rogers introduced us to their artistic journeys and the impacts of parenting and care upon these. Frank, moving and genuinely eye-opening, each speaker’s account challenged perceptions, unpicked inequalities and exposed systemic barriers to artistic practice. The talks were followed by a creative discussion around mechanisms of support, our needs and wishes.
