Continuing the Conversation on Care
MOTHEROTHER
Artist Meet Up Eight
@ BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art
We came together to Continue the Conversation on Saturday 19th October 2024 at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. We were joined by an array of guests and proceedings were initiated by Dr Martina Mullaney (founder of Enemies of Good Art) who gave the introductory keynote on Transcending Audiences. Martina’s provocative speech detailed the lack of academic attention paid to the maternal in the art sphere, gave us an insight into their work as a practicing artist and set the scene for what would be a broad discussion with Lauren McLaughlin (founder of Spilt Milk) and Dyana Gravina (founder of Procreate Project and Mother House Studios). This was followed by breakout discussion sessions with the 3 artists, as well as, The NewBridge Project, Helix Arts and a special ‘In Conversation’ between Hettie Judah (critic, curator and author) and Rebecca Morrill (editor and writer). The afternoon keynote was give by Hettie Judah who presented findings from live research around changes in the art sector in support of parents and carers, or lack thereof. This was followed by a powerful set of spoken word performances by Tahmina Ali, which set the scene for the final discussion of the day. Artist and researcher Lady Kitt joined Hettie and Tahmina to explore practical ways to be more inclusive and advocate for oneself as an artist with intersectional needs facing multiple barriers. The overarching themes of sustainability were emphasised through key questions from Lady Kitt, in tandem with their installation ‘Sustain’ and craftivist activities within the space, which served as prompts for attendees to reflect upon and react to the content of the day.
